I have been using the Scott's catalog to get the numbers for some stamps I have. I have a few I would like to get to fill in a few gaps I have here and there. On stamps I have seen for sale, and I think I have seen mentioned in the forums, they don't sell for the full Scott's price listed, but as a percentage. what would you say is percentage? Thanks in advance.

There is no one answer to this common question. Price depends on condition, scarcity, and so many other factors. It is not uncommon for very nice and valuable stamps to see higher than catalog prices. For common stamps of good to very fine condition, 25-50% catalog would not seem unreasonable.

It also depends on how popular a particular country or area of collecting is at the time.

Thanks, it helps. I think I have decided on a couple countries to collect and was curious besides filling the few holes like I mentioned above. The countries is Spain and Yugoslavia/Slovania region (Slovic countries).

A few years ago, I bought a collection of unmounted mint 1945-69 Yugoslavia, including most of the scarcer, high CV items, for around 10% of the Gibbons CV (which is usually higher than Scott's). That tends to cover stamps for which you're paying more than 10% and others that will be under 10%. Modern (post-1945) Spanish collections can also be picked up cheaply.

Experience and research are the only answers to your question.
Catalogues are only a guideline.
Web sites like ebay and Hip Stamps can be confusing as the same stamp can be many times under or over catalogue value.
Perhaps a local stamp club can help you in many different ways.

Ireland2018: you may want to check out auction house results from those businesses that sell bulk collection; such as Daniel F. Kelleher, Rasdale, Harmer-Schau, etc.

Scott's catalogue listings are for stamps in extremely fine condition, and 99.9% of stamps do not make this grade.

Scott prices in VF condition but even then many would not meet that criteria.
