Good Morning, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this stamp. Does it appear to be re-gummed? I notice, particularly on the left side, that the gum does not appear to be covering the ends of the perforations. It is not my photograph so I am wondering if it is possibly a lighting situation, or a re-gumming. I would be grateful for your input.

Hi Brad905 I was at a stamp club and a gentleman approached me to show me a mint gummed stamp..I looked at it and told him it was a regummed stamp..He got mad and I brought over my buddy stamp expert and he said the same thing as what I told him. If you have the stamp in hand, it can be easy to figure whether or not it has been regummed...First the stamp is printed and them gummed and then run through the perforation machine. When the perf machine has done its job, their will be gum all over the back like the RED arrow shows...If your stamp has been regummed, some of the gum will appear on the vertical sides of the perforation holes as it drips down the perfs where the YELLOW arrow shows, Hope that makes sense.... Hi Rob, It does make sense - thanks. This is something I am bidding on, so I am trying to figure out if it is regummed BEFORE I have it in hand. I hate those disappointments! On this stamp, the very ends of the teeth seem to be a light colour, indicating that it may have been re-gummed. But something else I look for is the paper fibres sticking out around the perforations. Often times these absorb the new gum, and disappear. They are visible on this stamp, although only at the teeth. I suspect that this one is re-gummed though. |

The original poster asks: Quote: This is something I am bidding on, so I am trying to figure out if it is regummed BEFORE I have it in hand It makes more sense to me to determine these critical details BEFORE any bidding, rather than at some later time. Returns are messy. Auctions don't like running an approval service. Beyond that, I see over 100 mint copies currently on ebay with various centering and gum condition. This stamp is readily available. When in doubt, chase a different one which has more certainty to you or make sure you have ALL your questions answered before placing any bid. |

Hi John, Thank you for your comments. You are of course right about auctions and I should have been clear that I was considering bidding on it, as the price is currently low. I have not yet, due to the re-gumming possibility. It is one of the better centred ones I have seen in a while on ebay. Of course, much better can be found on the dealers sites and auctions, but at a considerably higher price. |

For what a free opinion is worth, what I see:
Looks to me likely disturbed OG. Note the crackling and also the uneven colouring of the gum (vertical streaks). This often happens when stamps are stored in those plastic sheets and see some humidity; the gum softens, pools and redries.
That being said, John Becker gives you good advice here. One is always better to see the item in person. |

Again free opinion valued at same :)
I've bought a couple MNH stamps like that due to their cheapness and been disappointed after. My thinking now - when I'm paying the premium for a non-hinged mint I'd like the gum to be as pristine as possible, not questionable or disturbed. Otherwise, why not just buy a nice MH for likely less and a better front? |

Actually, I am more wondering if the stamp has been reperfed at top. Note how the other 3 sides have feathering at the perf tips, which is normal. The top has numerous perf tips which are vert straight and look "cut" rather than separated normally. The perf tips also vary somewhat in width. Proves nothing but does make me wonder.
The gum is vertically striated on the right-hand 1/3 of the stamp from the back. This would be very hard to create or recreate when regumming but perhaps it says something about the left 2/3 of the stamp? |

Stamp has really nice margins for issue. I think it has been recently separated from a multiple. At a glance, I'm not overly bothered by that one irregular perf at top.
I've probably said enough now, perhaps the seller is best to put eyes on it and offer their opinion. |

Per John Becker, avoid this if you have questions. Without examining this in person, alteration is hard to tell. This could be bought under the condition of a good certificate. Whether that additional cost is worth it is up to you, but with the gum and questions about the top perfs, I'd pass on this one. Comparing the top perfs with the bottom: Gauge looks correct to me. The holes don't match exactly because the bottom perfs aren't well punched. But a few top perfs might or might not be deepened. The gum striations do go all the way across the back. That said, I don't recall if this is natural or this strong for this issue. Also, striations can be a sign of "expert" hinge mark removal that will not soak perf tips or holes. |

Interesting - seems a bit steep for that but so long as the buyer likes it... |
