I have many of this gentleman's first day covers from the 40's into the 60's but this is the only one that has this square box with the "R" and number inside.
It's also the only one that has the round cancel on the back most all others are completely clear.
Is this registered mail?

Cheers, Bill

On registered mail you usually have the sending P.O. cancel on front and the final receiving end post office cancel on the back. There are many earlier covers that have transit post marks of each office/area it has passed through also in addition to the basic two.
