I'm not sure this is the right forum, but I'm looking for classic Cuba stamps when under US occupation. . .Scott #176 (1898) to 231 (1899). . .I have literally never seen many of them for sale. Only the US stamps with overprints seem to ever be available. ebay has exactly 6 US occupation Cuba stamps for sale right now - all of them are overprints. A couple possessions dealers I know don't seem to have them.

I'm in the US. . .does the embargo (or whatever restrictions we have now) impact the availability of stamps?

ebay actually has a few more when I looked again, but just a couple dozen. ..and almost every one is one of the overprints.

Expensive and scarce/rare. Here is a great selection that Siegel sold from one man's collection:

The ones in the auction look like the rarer ones. 11 of the major scott numbers catalog for under $100 and 15 more catalog for under $1000 in mint condition (of the 1898 stamps) - I've never seen them for sale anywhere.

They are all rare ones. Scott values have not changed very much at all in at least 30 years. That is likely because a) there has not been enough material sold in that time to update prices and/or b) there are very few collectors interested in the issues, perhaps because they are so hard to find. This situation is not limited to Cuban US Administration issues.

Clearly, many of these were probably destroyed by climatic conditions over the years. Otherwise these stamps left Cuba long ago, probably to collectors in the US. As for an embargo, do you really think average Cubans living under a communist system for over 50 years have the wherewithal to have a stamp collection of any significant value, or would be allowed to sell them if they had them?

You are probably going to have to commission a dealer that travels extensively or has a lot of international connections to track down and buy these for you.

There were some in this recent lot - only a couple of pictures, unfortunately. Didn't sell.

Frank Bachenheimer has a good stock of US Possessions and a web site - www.astampdealer4u.com. He does shows if you must see him in person

Another show dealer is Arnold Selengut - Bejjco of Florida Inc.

There are others that have a good general stock, but I have done business with both of the above and they are good honest dealers.

Thanks . . .I have worked with Frank Bachenheimer quite a lot. He doesn't have the Cuba stamps, at least mint ones. I'll see if I can contact Arnold Selengut.

Lot 3100 in the new HR Harmer US auction - can't tell if it's good stuff or not - but certainly a bunch there.
