I have over the years come across some Scott 75 stamps with a weird oddity that could not be explained...FIG.1 shows just of my stamps that have that oddity.

FIG.1

FIG.2 - shows a close up of the oddity.

There are probably a lot of collectors out there that not seen this oddity...It is most likely caused by a DUCTOR BLADE (slang for ductor blade is DOCTOR BLADE)...When the blade wipes the plate, it drags excessive ink onto the bottom margin...It is not a re-entry, but a collectible stamp...For lack of a better term, it has been called a "RUN ON".

Validation has been made by the 2 write ups below..

Peter Spencer¹s, THE WEARING OF THE GREEN, PLATES AND STATES OF THE CANADA 1898 ONE CENT NUMERAL ISSUE, BNAPS, 2006, page 27

AND

L.N. William¹s, FUNDAMENTALS OF PHILATELY, APS, 1990, pages 285, 293-294

Hi Robert. Is there a function in GIMP that you use to put the ellipses on you images?

Hi Robert - agree, it seems like a great tool. I don't like the format that the file saves in, but that may be explained in the tutorial.

I am using GIMP for perf measurement, and measuring the height/width of the oval to try to better understand stamp size variance and the correlation with perforation measurement outliers.

In a previous post, you mentioned that the size of the original die should provide for a constant size of the oval to use as a baseline for this study.

Imagine this type of analytic perf study has already been done, I still get a kick out of it though...
