I'm fairly new to these issues. Apparently, some values are found both in the 1870-89 issue (Montreal and Ottawa printings) and in the 1888-97 issue (Ottawa printing only). Distinguishing by color is difficult. Scott relies on gum, but none of my thirty examples has gum. Can anyone suggest other ways to tell these issues apart?

Hmm.... I did wonder why helpful suggestions weren't pouring in.

I'm no expert on these issues - at all! But here are a couple of websites that might clarify or confuse things:

There are also some threads on this forum you might find helpful too.

Good luck!

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

Thanks, Dan. The websites look terrific. I'll check out both of them.

I'm a newby as well, but I believe that John Hillson literally wrote the book on this subject:
