Hello,
Just bought a Swiss collection and found a handful of sitting helvetia stamps (1881 series) overprinted "AUSSER KURS". I do know that this means they are remainders after the obsolete date of 1883.

My question is I cannot find any valuation information of Ausser Kurs printed stamps relative to used or unused (not mentioned in Scott). Are they like the bar cancelled stamps of Spain? They must have some value (or maybe not). Some percentage of unused, I would assume. Just looking ballpark.

If anyone knows or can help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Bruce

They have value depending on the date.A 1862 3 FRANCO (T2) can go for 50euros,an 1881 50 FRANCO (T2) 19euros.The paper types can be important also. There are 2 Types. "Ausser Kurs" T1 and "AUSSER KURS" T2.The type 1 is scarcer. Both lower left upward too upper right.
I imagine there could be manipulated stamps with the cancel removed with a forged overprint…
An example of a T1 overprint:

Lot 54 (T2):

They are listed in the Zumstein catalog. There are two different fonts used. If you can post pictures I can probably ID them for you and give a value

Here is a pic of the "AUSSER KURS" stamps:

As an aside, the 40 gray at the bottom has a different kind of cancel or overprint. Can anyone tell me what that might be? I don't believe it is a postal cancel.

40r gray: that is a postal type of cancel, among many types used mid-1870s to early 1880s; the town is unreadable to me. One does find values that are scarcer used with faults often enough, but there is always the chance that the cancel is forged or backdated.

All four are Type 2 overprints, the T2 that perf12 indicated. Nine values of the above stamps have been overprinted with shown overprint.
The bottom cancel looks like a regular one - I would need better picture

I did not look at the cancel very carefully at first. If the cancel is genuine I believe this would catalog at close to $4000. I never get that lucky. Is a forged cancel difficult to detect? Here is a better scan:

No idea of detecting fake cancels other than having a reference collection of cancels. For one, the typeface of the numerals must match what was used at the time. Without knowing the town name this would be impossible to pin down, but I think I see the last letter O or C or G.

Still, it is worrisome that the town name is so weakly struck. Plus, this cancel looks like it's missing "BRF." or "BR." and "EXP." (briefexpedition) flanking the cross, though perhaps there is a style of cancel like this. But this is what I think is a (partial) typical cancel of the style:

(White paper issue. Not my stamp)

Looking at non-English language retail sites, for the sans serif AUSSER KURS like you have, the stamps sells for about about 50-60% Scott mint. Not bad. There is also a large serifed handstamp which goes for like 3x Scott per stamp, hinged.
