IMO these are better than VF. More like XF. Be ready for a lot of varied opinions! |

Ok, I'll bite and give a different opinion. On bi-color stamps like this $5 Franklin, centering should be based on two factors: the centering of the frame within the perforated margins AND the registration of the vignette within the frame. While the frame is well-centered, the rightward shift of the vignette detracts. |

The $5 stamp is twisted clockwise so very very slightly, it is hard to see until you measure it with a screen ruler.
BUT..Nicely centered stamp my friend. Robert

Bicolors are not graded by the positioning of the vignette. You have to decide for yourself if you like where the vignette sits.
These are both XF centering in my view. |

Interesting, not considered that before. So do "Grading" and "Centreing" go hand in hand in US philately? Sounds plausible to me. |

I REALLY like the $5 - if it were mine, I would send it for a graded cert and NOT be surprised if it came back as a 98. A lot of people on this forum frown upon grading stamps, and I GET their rationales, but I've played that game (see a pretty stamp, spotting the potential of a high grade, and scarfing it up) a number of times and have been, mostly anyway, very happy with the results. I have a few very focused interests in philately, by issue, cancel, etc, but one field that I 'dabble' in is the buy-a-pretty-stamp-and-get-it-graded 'game'. I'd give your stamp a 75/25 chance of being graded as a 98. Of course, it has to be sound otherwise. PSE website lists this stamp at $375 in 98 used - you could realistically get about half that, or a bit more at auction. If you are not a graded-stamp fan, this would look AWESOME in your album!! |

Thank you very much for all comments and suggestions. I will gladly try to send a stamp to grading. Do you think it is worth sending only $ 5 or maybe 10c as well? I've never done it and I don't know how it works from Poland, but I'll try to find out. |

In terms of spending money, bear in mind that grading is not a practice followed by European collectors. |
