I don't quite know why this check has a stamp on it! Tried so many searches and don't know the who, what, why and how's of it all. Any assistance would be appreciated!
Checks and many other documents were taxed during and after the Civil War as a method of revenue generation for the federal government. The "first issue" revenue stamps were issued to pay these taxes. There is a catalog that goes into detail about the different taxes and types of documents that the stamps appear on. The 2 cent check tax lasted longer than most - into the early 1880s.
