New To Hobby Of Stamp Collecting

I have a lot of questions on the stamps that I own, that now I am in the process of cataloging, and hope to find good references, links and in-general good information when there are not definite/definitive answers to my inquiries. Still on the fence about selling my finds or just keeping them. I probably lean toward selling, but do not want to sell any stamps if I am not sure of their valuation.

So being new to stamps, I do not know if "Cherrypicking" snd selling stamps is "Taboo" or against the sentiments of the Stamp Community or not. I do not even know if Cherrypicking is used in this hobby. Is there a more acceptable term the community commonly uses to express distaste at this practice? One of the reasons for selling at least some if not all, if it is a practiced that is frowned upon, is that it is costly to buy the supplies to properly store the stamps for the long term.

I do enjoy the research and the inevitable history both in the US and World stamps. Of course history, as well as researching, is also a part of my overall hobby. Which is to buy what I believe to be an antique/modern object whose value is not appreciated by the seller, i.e. is a "sleeper", and to resale it to finance my -habit- as my wife sometimes refers to this activity of buying stuff. Of course not being an expert across so many fields, I mostly end up with a lot of cheap, and some times expensive junk. Instead of the "gold nuggets" I am looking for. I think of my hobby as modern day prospecting without the pick. Or my hobby could be refered to as "Antique Archaeology", recycling or just as hoarding. Depending on your point of view.
