Re the 1c Coral Tree Flower issues, how can one differentiate between the 1963 issue, Scott 289, and the 1964 issue, Scott 318?

Both are wmk 348 and perf either 15x14 or 14x15.

Google has not been any help.

I don't have a Scott catalogue, but I think that these are probably the two stamps that you are referring to. The 1963 Gibbons sg227 and the later redrawn sg239.


The size of the Republic of South Africa/Republiek van Suid-Afrika text is larger in the later stamp on the right.

Thank you, Clive and Roberto. Also, I finally had success with Google and found the South African Collectors Society: www.southafricacollector.com This site confirmed that the 1963 issue is the original design and the 1964 issue is the redrawn design with "SOUTH AFRICA" and "SUID-AFRIKA" in a larger font than "REPUBLIC OF" and "REPUBLIEK VAN".
