Hello all

As I was researching my Mexico stamps, I came across these 60 CTS Aereo Correo (Guzman, Ramirez) stamps and what I found was that they were not ultra common? of course - I have my doubts that I have anything uncommon. I looked for more variations of a common type and did not immediately find anything. At times it is hard to find a lot of detail on Mexico stamps. Any insight is appreciated.

The only perf 11 I see is on the upper right stamp. If it does not have a watermark
(Eagle in a circle and MEX-MEX in it) you win the Bingo. If it has the watermark ,just a penny stamp.

Scott C445 (the common one) and C471A (the rare one) are both perf 14 only, so where does perf 11 come from?

Further, C471A only exists mint, originally a find of 2 sheets of 50 with no more reported since. No used are known. I would be suspicious of this being a purposefully issued stamp. As evidenced by the auction prices achieved, collectors seem to regard this to be more in the modern EFO category. As for the Hipstamp listing, good luck to a buyer of that.

Watermarks of this period can be hard to see because of the variety of papers possible, particularly with definitives/regular issues. To learn how they look, try some commemoratives of the time period first. There will be two very similar ones, MEX-MEX with eagle in circle (MEX intersects the circle on two sides. Scott watermark 300) and MEX with eagle in circle (MEX only appears once with each circle and does not intersect it. Scott watermark 350). The commemoratives will have one or the other watermark. And yes, if you don't have enough of the entire watermark visible on a specific stamp, these can be hard to tell apart.

I am sure these are C445. I was not finding any on ebay or other online catalogs so I was confused - due to three auctions having a similar stamp at a high point {Siegel https://siegelauctions.com/lots.php...9&page_no=75

https://stampauctionnetwork.com/sr/sr8530.cfm

I also was a little confused on the 11 perf - as I also saw perf 14. Are those that I show perf 14? I am still learning to use the perf gauge. sorry last question - the stamp that is in the top right corner has a black smudge - is that the cancel? Thanks friends.

Here is the back. I tried to find the watermark by putting it under the light and moving it around but I couldn't see anything. I read that I would need to try water or some specific fluid. The fluid thing makes me nervous.

You needn't be nervous about using lighter fuel on a shallow black dish to bring out the watermark, as long as you put out your cigarette before unleashing the Zippo. Soaking in water then looking can also work. And some watermarks can remain damnably difficult to see whatever you do!

Mrita75,
Water is an excellent fluid to find watermarks but there are a couple of caveats. First, it takes a long time to dry the stamp before you can put it back in your album. Second, don't use it on stamps with gum because you will end up with stamps with no gum.

There are a small handful of issues that have ink that is water- or petroleum soluble. Early Great Britain and Germany have a few. So check the catalog first, which usually has a warning note for those issues.

Are those that I show perf 14?

Yes, perf 14 for all 3. In Scott, perf 11 is also given for the set (which may not be a set in other catalogs), but Scott notes that only certain values are perf 11 (and not the 60c).

Yes. It looks to be the CDS (circular date stamp) part of a machine cancel of the type that the US used to use. It just didn't get inked very well. Some collectors like a minimal cancel since more of the design shows clearly. But the others have cancels (with dates) that are interesting and add to the stamp's story.

Identifying the stamp aside...why I am so happy to have discovered stamp collecting. I am with my parents for the Holidays and have been discussing the stamps with my father (especially the Mexico ones). Of many, I brought this stamp up. Well he did further research and discovered that his great great grandfather, my great great great (Jose Emparan) - worked along side both Guzman and Ramirez and others on the constitution of 1857! So amazing.
