I had stopped buying on
ebay a few years ago after the return rate reached 60%. So, today, I tried to submit the necessary forms. The process, once the Claiming sales tax exemption window was found in the middle of some other document, was worse than I could have imagined. The instructions were sketchy. The form
ebay asked for is seldom used any more, at least in Massachusetts. They failed to mention the blanket form check box. The PDF of the form was too big to upload. Then a smaller PDF, readable by Adobe Acrobat could not be opened by
ebay. Another catch-22 was that
ebay wants the sales tax registration address to match my mailing address. But it doesn't because the Commonwealth wants the street address, but mail goes to a post office box. At least
ebay was prompt kicking back the form a few times. Who knows how long it will take
ebay to "verify" the submission that the web site could take a couple of weeks to approve? Will I ever use it? Who knows? Except for being exceedingly polite, the
ebay team could have been pulled straight from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
