Beazell Cachets Question

Why are Beazell cachets so valuable? I have a couple of them.

They used to be more valuable, they have gone down in value in the fairly recent past.

They are valuable because they were only produced in quantities of 1-5 covers per design.

While their values have come down, they are still quite valuable and are dependent on the design and the stamp issue for which it was created.

Stampman2002: Where did you find the information that Beazells were only produced 1-5 examples for each design. Did you read that somewhere or is this a personal opinion?

In the November/December 2019 issue of FIRST DAYS, I have an article concerning the 8 designs that Beazell produced for the 1932 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Game stamp issued January 25, 1932 (Scott 716). I can show (with verification) that for that issue he produced at least 8 examples for the ski jumping design, 11 examples for the skating contest and ice skating designs, 12 examples for winter scene and ski-ing designs, 13 examples of the sleighing and sledding designs and at least 14 examples of the tobagganing design for a grand total of 94 covers spread over the 8 designs.

Only 10 of the covers have handcancels, the rest are machine cancels.

Prices for Beazells are coming down. My personal opinion is that there are fewer collectors of FDCs from the 1920s-1940s are older collectors are dying off. The supply may be the same, but the demand has lessened.

I have seen that information about Beazell covers in a couple of auction catalogs and thought it accurate.

While there may be some issues which exceed that number, as you have pointed out, I believe the number to be fairly accurate, given the numbers/occurrence at auction, for most issues.
