Thank you for the correction. I thought I had read that term from the "Marcel" research of UNICEF.

The text reads "NEDERLANDSCH PLAKZEGEL." A plakzegel was affixed (plakken = to affix, zegel = seal, as in label or stamp) to documents, including receipts, as proof of collection of revenue. They are the most widely used revenue stamps. Dutch Association for Fiscal Philately (in Dutch) shows a later issue: https://belastingzegels.nl/fiscaalz...e-plakzegel/ It mentions a catalogue: "catalogus belastingzegels Nederland 1996" by Paul Korte. 22crows is correct: scrolling. These had nothing to do with railways. |

Thanks Jill, and NSK I was almost certain there were tiny trains, with smoke coming from their stacks. Cheers for the reference, saved. |

Referring to the set of Dutch naval heroes: https://goscf.com/t/70915&whichpage=2#683141The set was issued during the German occupation of the Netherlands. The 7 1/2 cent stamp shows Admiral Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter. He reformed the Dutch navy and founded the marines corps. He was a key figure during the Anglo-Dutch wars of the late 17th century. In June 1667, he sailed up the Thames Estuary and up the Medway where he raided the English fleet and captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles. The German occupiers used the effigy of Admiral De Ruyter for propaganda reminding the Dutch it had not been the first time the English attacked the Dutch and hoping to enlist Dutch soldiers. Four of the stamps were designed by Sem Louis Hartz who was employed by printers Joh. Enschedé, and Mrs. Engelina Reitsma-Valença. Designs by S.L. Hartz Designs by E. Reitsma- Valença Both Hartz and Reitsma-Valença were Jews and had to hide from the Germans. Nonetheless, their work was used for the stamps. They received their fees for their work through other artists. |

Nice work NSK, enjoyed the background As a kid, some of these caught the imagination. Quote: In June 1667, he sailed up the Thames Estuary and up the Medway where he raided the English fleet and captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles. That must have taken some pluck! Nice set of stamps, with full information. Fast forward 1999 New Zealand stamp All we get is "Leading the way, splitting the atom" No date No name (Rutherford) How are the kids going to learn? Bad design NZ! |

Netherlands Is this the best you can do? Once every 4 years, I get to witness one of the most beautiful visual treats in all of Christendom. It is a sight that leaves in it's wake, the shape of the Spitfire, the E Type Jaguar, and even the De Havilland Constellation. Maybe, just maybe, on par with the Viking Longship. It is the Dutch speed skaters, Is there anything more beautiful? This year was an absolute feast. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-02...abc_news_web |

The two Dutch pursuit teams were a joke. They did not train for the games. There was a lot of infighting. The individual performances have been much better. One of our women can win three golds. She already has three. Another one has won her sixth Gold, winning at least one Gold in each of five consecutive Games.
We are looking for a clean sweep on the 1,000 metres for men.
Also, in the short track events, on of our women can win two or three medals. |

To NSK Care to do a short coverage on the "Veth" stamps please? Do they come Litho and Photo? (Photo has the pitted edges like the Machins?) Why are they called Veth stamps? Here is a 50c, with a Type 1 (Single Dot) Roller Cancel ROTTERDAM (1912) Originally Issued for use on the spaarbank zegels. |

They are called Veth because of the desiger of the stamp: Jan Veth.
In the Netherlands series especially those of Wilhelmina get names.
1890: hangend haar. (Hangin Hair)
1898: Bontkraag. (Furcoat collar)
1924: Veth. Designer
1940: Konijnenburg. Designer.
1947: Harz. Designer.
Juliana:
1949: En face. Facing you
1953: en profil. Side profil
Printing of the Veth is Rasterdiepdruk. I have not been able to translate or find out exactly what this is called in Engelish. I believe some form of Intaglio printing. |

Rod,
I was out supporting 'my hockey girls' that are in fourth place in the honours league for the national championship.
To add to Johan's post: 'rasterdiepdruk' is what in the UK is called photogravure. So, yes, most Machins. The use of this technique had something to do with the 'en profil' design replacing the 'en face' design; both by Sem Hartz. The 'en face' stamps had too fine details for the mass production using the photogravure process.
The 1947 series of Wilhelmina was designed by Sem Hartz whom I mentioned in the above post on Dutch naval heroes. The typographic elements on the 'Harz' series, as was the case for the preceding 'Konijnenburg' one, were designed by Jan van Krimpen. I am working on the contemporaneous set of numerals.
Sem Hartz was very prolific. He designed all three permanent series showing portraits of Queen Juliana. Johan already mentioned 'en face' and 'en profil.' The third set is often referred to as 'Regina' for the inscription. There is an example of the 25c from this set on the previous page.
In 1920, a design competition was held for new postage stamps showing the portrait of Queen Wilhelmina. The submissions were not good enough and Jan Veth was commissioned with the design of the stamps. He used the portrait he had designed for the 1898 10 Gulden banknote. |
