Elephant shrew, be a good cleaner first to be a good runner!

Quote:

Their hunting areas and hiding places are connected by a network of trails which they keep clean of debris, to enable swift movement between areas.

It's incredible that they are so clever to know to clean their trails for escape in advance! I am wondering whether they learn it or purely inherit it?

From the "Exceptional Pollinisators" set from Belgium (2019)
It's not quite a mouse but in french we call it "souris ŕ miel" (i.e. "honey mouse")
This set depicts also a butterfly,a bat,a green beetle and a bee.

Playing possum! Learn how to die in order to live!

(Common Opposum, 1979)

Quote:
The Virginia opossum is noted for reacting to threats by feigning death. This is the genesis of the term "playing possum", which means pretending to be dead or injured with intent to deceive. In the case of the opossum, the reaction seems to be involuntary, and to be triggered by extreme fear. It should not be taken as an indication of docility. It lies on its side, mouth and eyes open, tongue hanging out, emitting a green fluid from its anus whose putrid odor repels predators.

A real rat pictured on a postage stamp! Rats don't enjoy a good reputation, so this one is a rarity (Rattus norwegicus). 1990

(Hello Idebee, A small zoological comment: The possum is not related to rats and mice, although it might look a little bit like a rat; look at the teeth in the photo, the possum is not a rodent. And shrews are not related to rats and mice either, although they look a bit like mice; they are predators and not rodents like mice. K.)

Hi, Kris, I did not notice the teeth, thanks for the hints! In Chinese, they are all called mice. Opossum is called Carrying Mouse, while Elephant Shrew is called Elephant Mouse. :-) You know ancient China has very different scientific systems until modern times when Chinese began to learn from western civilizations.

It's interesting to notice that even if they have such bad reputation, mice tend to be heroes and stars in so many tales and works as we have already seen in this thread. But as more lovely as squirrels are, and as more clever if I say, they don't become so popular as mice and tend to play subordinate roles.

The stamp Guri & Gura reappeared in 2019, which depicts them making of a large castella. Eggs, which are key in picture books, are not only designed for stamps, but also in the form of colored balls. What, "egg shell car" carrying the letter is the original design of this stamp! Based on the touch and lines of the original artist Yuriko Yamawaki, a stamp designer drew a picture of the letter.

Hi, all friends of mice and rats. I found a few photographs of skulls on the web which illustrate how different animals looking like rats can be, it's quite amazing. The top left is the rat, the top right is the mouse. The bottom left is the elephant shrew, the bottom right is the opossum. (The pictures are not accurate as far as relative size is concerned.)

(Idebee, the story of the Japanese mice looks like fun! K.)

I am wondering where and how they get that big egg. Is it like this one and some other similar scenes in the previous pages?
And for the real mice, it's amazing that they are clever enough to know to use a tool, and even to cooperate in teamwork !

The story of the Guri & Gura stamp:

Guri & Gura are two mice and love cooking and eating. One day, when walking along the path picking up acorns, they found a big egg! Guri & Gura thought to make a castella with that egg, but it was too big, so they gave up carrying the egg home! Conversely, changed their policy to carry pots and ingredients onto the spot and make the cake on site! With the pots and ingredients ready, they made a big castella, and the burnt smell was so inviting, the forest animals gathered together. When the castella was completed, all the animals ate it and had a hilarious time! Guri & Gura made a car with the remaining egg shells, and put the pot on the car and went home.

A little different from what I imagined! :-)

Wow! A real mouse paradise! On the ground!

Man Discovers Family Of Mice Living In His Garden And Builds Them A Miniature Village

"The mice seem to love their shelter and moved in at once. They're field creatures, so they still run away if I get too close or move too fast, but I often manage to sit not too far away with the camera and they seem happy going in and out with nuts and seeds.

During the winter Guri and Gura had fun with their friends in the snow and even built a snowman; in the evening they rested at the fireplace. A lovely set about two mice and their friends. 2014
