Okay, Robert, did not see that one coming

But it seems to me that covers differ, adhesives differ, etc, so you might need a pretty good sample size to get unambiguous results.

I'd also like to modiy what I wrote above: try it & see.

It occurs to me that an uneven texture in the cover might result in considerable stress being put on the stamp as the calipers close, depending on the size of the contact points of the calipers.

Very true...That's why I {just my opinion} Don't believe you can estimate any stamp on a cover whether or not it is THICK/NORMAL/THIN without removing any stamp from the cover first...And me, you and others would apply different pressure on calipers deferentially.
