Would anyone happen to know what the '811' perfin on this £10 British South Africa Company stamp stands for? I'm assuming this is a revenue stamp, so is it a cancel?

The BSAC arms stamps, including the £10 stamp, were valid for both postage and revenue usage. Fiscally used BSAC stamps were cancelled by pen, fiscal rubber stamp, or perfin. The perfin either formed the letters BSAC, USED, or a date - 811 could be 8th November, with the year having missed the stamp and only piercing the document it was attached to. Clive

Tim - those are great stamps! The format of your perfins compared to mine and vayolene's make me wonder if ours are year dates or perhaps something else. |

My guess is that yours are something else, but I'll have to do some research to try and find out what, exactly. |

Is the 10-pound issue at the start of this thread listed by Scott? I looked under South Africa and all the precursors without any luck. |

Can't help you with the Scott number and listing, but it's listed in SG under Rhodesia as SG13. My guess it would be Rhodesia as Sc13? Rhodesia and it's precursor British South Africa Company had nothing to do with South Africa. |

Aaarggh! Of course ! I should have remembered that (or spent less time on US issues...or not have gotten old and forgetful). Thanks Tim, you're the man! |

Perhaps as the first 2 numbers were single digits, the 01 (for 1901) was replaced with a single digit "1". To keep it in one simple line? 8 1 1 (8 jan 1901). |
