As a first issue collector, I collect the first issue (single or set) from each stamp issuing entity. I also include Scott N's and L's as stamp issuing entities. Generally I stay with Scott, but at times I have included items listed is SG or Michel that are not in Scott. I have been sitting on these Kiev trident overprints since the mid-90's not sure what to do with them. They are not in Scott, but looking in ebay I see they are listed as Mi #1-12. I do not have access to a Michel catalog, so is this a sub-listing under Ukraine as a Kiev Local? Obviously it is not the overall 1-12 for Ukraine. Just trying to determine how to create my album page since I am not familiar with the Mi system. As a second question, do the inverted overprints also get a listing in the catalog? I have a set of those as well.

Sorry to say all those stamps above are after the fact .They were overprinted for the philatelic market place . I have a few dozen pages of Soviet stamps overprinted with each State member of the U.S.S.R. . The are in my Cinderella collection . |

Nice blocks. I understand these were officially authorised unlike so many other surcharges on Russian stamps around this time. These are also listed as SG Ukraine 23-35. |

Floortrader I agree most of the items overprinted out of the former USSR were philatelic in nature, the trident overprints seemed to be semi-official. They are listed in Mi and now I find they are in SG. Would love to see one on a cover, but since I listed a few other items in my collection with Mi #, I'll go with it. I have another page of overprints. Some were St. Petersburg overprints, but I have not found how official they were. That will be another post. I wrote an article about some stamps I was told were from Karabakh. I'll search and see if there is a discussion on that and post there. |

Not sure if that would be a deal or not. Someone with a Mi or SG could give you a catalog value. That is the ebay listing I found to give me the Mi numbers and I swiped the picture so I did not have to scan mine. I can say in the 90s I paid $5 for 2 sets of the normal set and $7.50 for the invert set pictured in the post above. |

Numberone's ----- Makes no sense to take issue with anyone here over those stamps . My interest in Trident Overprints #1's in my collection are a lot earlier and comprehensive to the issues of Odessa,Kyiv,Kharkiv,Katerinoslav ,Poltava,Podilia,Barashi,Baturyn,Berezno,Kherson,Novobilytsia and Popov.

Floortrader,
It was not my intent to take issue with anyone. There is no write or wrong answer. Just sharing my opinion on the set and why I plan to add them to my first issue collection just as you shared your decision to put them in your Cinderella collection.
With first issues we have a number of debates on what is the first issue. Since we have international members, there are those that go by SG (list first set chronologically), Scott (list first set by denomination), and Mi (still don't understand). Since I make my own pages, I can add a mix of items. I also have White Russia (perf/imperf) plus a couple different forgeries. Makes for an interesting challenge to find the different forgeries of the propaganda label. I have perf/imperf Azad Hind in my stockbook waiting for me to make pages. Again a Mi listed set and likely no more than German Propaganda labels, but will make a nice page with a bit of history.
Trying to share and gain knowledge. |
