Look for key symbols. Mao is always going to be the PRC.

Sun Yat-sen (once you recognize his face) is nearly always Republic of China, either early before the PRC or later on Taiwan.

The Chinese character with a rectangle pierced by a vertical line is "China" (Middle Kingdom).

"Sen" or "Sn" is an older Japanese currency.

The stylized circular chrysanthemum flower with rounded petals is Japan.

The Republic of China symbol (before the PRC in 1949 or on Taiwan) is the star (or sun) with rays coming out of it.

A figure-eight character is "Ni" as in Nihon or Nippon which means "Japan"
