What are some good philatelic subscriptions you would recommend?
It's easy to buy buy buy more stamps, but it would be nice to spend less money on stamps and more money/time on acquiring knowledge about stamps.
I currently collect the world so whether you recommend something general or something very very specific, I would like to know what resources are out there.
Thanks!

For around $10 you can get a DVD of about 60 books that have run out of copyright on ebay. Most of them around the early days of Philately. I drop into the Red Cross stamp shop in Perth and Pick up old Stanley Gibbons Monthly Magazines for $1 each. Check out Libraries for discontinued books, Book shops, ask, ask ,ask. Treasures abound out there for the asking. |

Have you used stamp smarter yet? There is a true wealth of information about stamps there. Unless you seeking minutiae knowledge about a very specialized area of collecting, I would exhaust the on line resources first before investing in a subscription. In addition to the wealth of information available on line, many of these sites are very generously free.
This by no means that if you have an interest in joining the APS or Classics Society, you shouldn't do so. In addition to the general advantages of membership, their periodicals are excellent as well. But just like the MONEY magazine subscription I have had for years, most of those issues I never get around to reading. There always seems to be something more immediate to grab my attention. |

' The American Philatelist comes attached to a membership in the APS, which is a pretty good two-fer.
The ASD&C (from the ASDA) is another excellent generalist read.
Kelleher's "new" house organ was also pretty good, but I somehow fell off their list after the first two issues; happily, I was able to pick up a half-dozen of the ones I missed at the Meadowlands show.
But when people ask what I collect, my flippant-but-true answer is: "stamp club memberships".
Check the avatar: I enjoy following what other people are doing.
So I read the AFDCS' First Days, the ATA's Topical Times, the Auxiliary Markings Club newsletter, the CS&CSS Seal News, etc, never mind what I've got piling-up unread (SIP, UPSS, etc).
Cheers,

I'm still in that novice stage of collecting where I'm still collecting the world without much of a focus. Eventually I aim to commit to one or two areas so that I can bog down and really get into the nitty gritty details, but I haven't been tugged any direction yet. I think that's why Im interested in getting multiple subscriptions or publications sent my way, so that I can see something cool and then spark a desire to focus my collecting.
However, you guys have given me some great tips on how to get a plethora of material without just forking over cash willy nilly. I AM a member of the APS and I have not looked at their library once; I will check them out. I also haven't really explored what is free online yet. I will admit, I do prefer paper publications over internet ones, but I think starting with free resources is probably for the best until I know what I want to focus on and invest in.
thanks again all

I subscribed to Gibbons Stamp Monthly and found it had more interesting articles than Linn's since I collect British empire. The article search for GSM is excellent with individual articles available as PDF. Linn's back issues are also available too. A one year subscription can give to access to get enough to read. I do not have much of a need of news (latest errors, price of inverted jenny, auction news).
The APS library offers a search but many articles are not available online so you would need to request.
