Did The PF Get This Rg22 Incorrect

I noticed this copy of RG22 VAR was recently added to the PF website (566884)with a opinion of genuine with major double transfer, and a few condition issues.


But something seemed not quite correct to me. So I looked up the serial number range for RG22 and only 1000 copies were produed with a range of 40,921 to 41920. Thoughts SCF?

32896 certainly looks to have the correct style canx for silver, rather than a documentary.

It can be tough to tell from images, but while the font in the overprint on the stamp in question is similar to the others shown, it's also bolder with thicker stems and serifs. Possible fake overprint?

It is a forged overprint. They are relatively common on 1c to $10 values, always with the left half of the oval cancellation. They are written about in Sloane's Column.

So how will PF respond?

I'm surprised that the obvious was overlooked by the PF. The serial numbers are well documented. To miss such a detail is inexcusable.

At one time, the PF relied on outside experts. Many of those no longer live or walk in the PF. Perhaps they should rely on outside experts more than they do, if they are doing so at all. Will you alert them to correct the error? We're all human and make mistakes.

The stamp in question sold today at Siegel for $550 + BP with no mention of the fake overprint.

Like an idiot, I actually was the underbidder. I completely forgot about this discussion. Bart mentioned the fake overprint in a subsequent email conversation we were having during the session, which jogged my memory.

The PF cert # mentioned in the OP has been removed from the PF website. I hope that Siegel will contact the winning bidder or that the buyer put it on extension.

Overall, the bidding was quite lively today. I was surprised at how well the wine stamps did, as those typically don't see a lot of activity, comparatively speaking.

I got shut out both yesterday and today, with the exception of one lot, which was actually the lot I wanted most from the 2 days, and it actually went fairly cheap... go figure.

Thursday's Siegel Auction, an RG22 with Serial # 40953 went for $275 + BP in keeping with the expected range of numbers.

That stamp was genuine, but also did not have a double transfer.

This stamp is still up on the the PF site, it has not been removed. I emailed Siegel last week about this item, but did not recieve a reply. I was suprised at the price it brought with its faults.

Where can I find a listing of the serial numbers printed for these and stock transfer issues etc. Thanks !! I find overprinted issues in old auction lots and question the serial numbers quite often as
fakes.

Very interesting. Yesterday when I did a search either for RG22 or cert #566884 before I posted, both searches came up empty. Today, both searches are successful.
