With the COVID-19 issues, I find myself with time on my hands. So I am going through some of the SC# 909-921 Overrun Countries to see if I have any printing errors. Like I said, I have lots of time. What magnification is needed to accurately see the difference in ink layers? What is the best method to determine the sequence of ink layers and confirm whether or not the stamp is a printing error?

Thanks in advance! Always great information here.

I believe I have come upon a solution. I realized that my cell phone has a really great camera on it. So I take a picture of the stamp and send it to myself in an e-mail. Then open it on my laptop and I can blow it up to a size that makes it easy to determine the color layers and identify the variety. Sorry I did not think of this sooner.

The layers are fairly easy to determine at 800dpi+. I normally scan at 1200 to 2400dpi, based on what I am looking for in terms of layers, printing anomalies, etc.

Keith Litchman is writing an excellent series of book on the Overrun Countries Issues and I am working with him as he develops his book series see: www.stampmankeith.com/book

Closer to home, you can see just some of the consistent plate errors that have been identified, by right and left plate position by checking the Library Section on StampSmarter at

Hal, what an amazing compilation of facts with regard to the Overrun Countries Issues. I had no idea the depth and breadth of variations that make up the collection of varieties encompassed within these issues. Thank you so much for including the link to these volumes and I offer my sincere admiration for the work you have produced. I do not know how much more Keith can add to this work. This appears to be a pretty complete and thorough compendium of facts and explanations regarding this fascinating period of philatelic history. It is only through the tireless work of people like you and Keith that we can appreciate our hobby even more.
