Dear Folks,

Trying to ID these stamps; your comments are welcome. I realize there's only so much you can tell from a digital image.


I suspect both are Scott 185 of the American Banknote "soft, porous paper" series. When you hold them up to the light, the paper (in places) shows evidence of what I call a "bricklayer" pattern, like this:

I agree. The backs here are clean enough that the paper porosity can be seen. A dip in watermark fluid/Ronsonol will probably show the overall pattern better.

The stamp with gum and a hinge remnant on the back needs a bath.

It is quite unlikely that either of them is Scott 185.

You can just hold them up to the light to see the pattern - they look like 185s to me, but it is all about the paper type.
