Notice how funky the perfs are. The attitude tended to be "no one except lawyers and accountants will see these, so who cares what they look like". So no one paid much attention to the pins; add cheap soft paper and huge printings and this is typical of the series.

Thanks for the replies and info. It's nice to have this resource of people in the know. Like I said, we're new to this, so here's my newbie questions:
We have several stamps with things written on them. Are these just hand cancels ore are some of them hand written overprints? If some are overprints, how do you know? Is there a resource you can point me to where I can learn more about this?

These are cancels that were required by the tax law and regulations.

This style documentary stamps have a variety where there is a red dot in the circles between the words. No value but fun to look for.

These are typically referred to as Pen Cancels.

Ruderat,
I will paint with a very broad brush and say that postage stamps and revenue stamps are used/canceled differently. This may take two different angles of thinking. Postage stamps are typically canceled by the PO with fairly standard handstamp and machine canceling devices, creating a certain uniformity. Revenue stamps are very often canceled by the individual user (like you or me) or small businesses and thus often will have a variety of manuscript markings of initials and dates, or handstamp markings of the business involved, not necessarily intended to cancel revenue stamps. Here are two promissory notes showing such. Your 50 cent stamp is of similar use, soaked from a document, very typical.

It is not possible to interpret your other written-on stamps without images.
