What Is This Strange Early Stamp

Still going through the stamps from this very old approval lot.

Not a clue what this is. Very odd perforation.

Finland, 1866 issues. It looks like a faded example of the type III serpentine roulette, with ribbed paper. Facit 9v5C3, Scott 10a. My example is at lower right on this page.

This is a stamp from Finland (NE Europe). Issued between 1866-74. Scott #10 (a to f, depending on perforation). Perforation is called "Serpentine roulette" by Scott. Value: depends on perforation type and (as ussual) on condition. Which, in your case, is very poor, I'm sorry.

Thanks for the quick ID. It seems this collector who amassed these approval cards didn't collect for condition. There's a few heartbreakingly poor examples. Bill, I was admiring your site last night. Nice work.

This stamp is not so simple.There are pages & pages in books just about the 40 pen stamp.Yours has vertically laid paper.The 40 pen was very often poorly printed.
Is it mint with gum ?
Yours is genuine judging from the secret marks and corner petal configurations.
You can learn just as much from faulty stamps as from VF stamps.
Some collectors only collect faulty stamps.Finding cheap faulty stamps
of high values is not so easy and sometimes impossible.These Finnish stamps are often faulty to very faulty(like yours).

Secret marks
1) small break in the inner oval.
2) line connecting the bottom right leg of the H and parenthesis.

It has partial gum, it's along the edges with the center of the stamp without gum.
I am of both minds about condition. I appreciate a beautifully printed stamp, that day when the printer was careful and not hurrying too much. The resultant stamp hidden away in someone's stockbook for ages without even smelling a hinge...but I also enjoy the rare find no matter the condition. (aside from the missed financial windfall). They all tell a story.

As is often the case with these issues the stamp was separated from the sheet with scissors except possibly on the left side. It wasn't easy to pull them apart, especially without tearing at places other than the connection in the roulette. It's well worth keeping until a better example comes around. :)
