There is no consistent grading standard used across the entire hobby. Yes, you can quantify centering of the main design but what about other criteria? Is 'color freshness' a criteria? For multiple pass printing processes is the color alignment a criteria? Are things like natural inclusions a criteria? Is a natural gum skip a criteria? Is an obliviator cancel a criteria?

And even if every philatelic entity (catalog publishers, certification organizations, etc.) hammered out a hobby-wide grading specification and all agreed to use it, there would still be plenty of subjective interpretations of the specification criteria.

The original poster clearly stated his laudable objective and it appears to have been reached, is there value in moving on to discuss subjective and largely undefined grading criteria?

I thought so or I would not have posted. And despite your clearly stated doubts about grading in general, I would like to hear other opinions.

To clarify, I should have been clearer that I was asking about centering grade only.

Seems to me that grading (of the centering of a stamp) is more objective than trying to decide if perfs are original or not from just an image.
