I have 2 stamps I believe are Canadian #254 - King George VI war issue stamps. One looks correct with the Dark Carmine as the color for "CANADA". The other stamp has "CANADA" in black letters. Are these both the same stamp?
Since the black occurs only in the path of the smudge, or cancel, it looks like it is a part of that material and has nothing to do the stamp's printing.
I used a piece of software to remove most of the cancel,and you can see the normal colour underneath...Could have been spread as a smear by a them or fingers..just my opinion.
