GERMANY Allied Occupation
Leipzig Fall Fair 1947
Michel 965

I have one more plate flaw but it does not appear on the full sheet.
Instead it is on a partial sheet I have.

Michel 965 PF IX Red dot in first stroke of the M in Messeprivileg field 16

This tiny dot plate flaw is microscopic.

Here is a closeup

Hi Litho,

There are four types of sheet: A, B, C, D. All have sub types: 1 to 4.

You have some constant (All sheet) and non constant (particular sheet) Partial.

Here 965 PF X, position 2, A3 only

Hornet, your PF X is nice but I don't have it on mine.

Does that mean there were four different printing plates?

On my full sheet and 2 partial sheets there is in field/position 9
Break in the red outside line on the right side above the letter H.
So would this be a non constant on one of types A,B,C or D ?

The arrow points to Michel 965 PF VII.

Hi Litho,

Here is a traduction (not perfect) from one of my book for this serie.

10 000 000 sets produced.

"The stamps were produced in offset printing in a sheet of four counter sheets. The sheet was then serrated from top to bottom with a comb toothing that was open at the bottom. The upper edges of the upper counter sheets were not serrated, but the upper edges of the lower counter sheets were always serrated. Since the frequency of both variants is the same, a separate evaluation is omitted. Only the series value counters can be found on the upper edges."

Your part sheet is a bottom left (see the cross beside and top of sheet perforated) Makes it a C sheet.

Hope this help.

Here a color comparision for AB Mi.Nr.920 (a, b, d) with 920a and d having PLF position 21 on sheet BZ 5555 re ug (color d, the color a is on cover)). Four other sheets have this and all with sheet number on the right side. Also only found on a and d color as we speak....

Salutations

Why would the serrated cut leave comb toothing?

My sheet 5x5 and the 2 partial sheets are not perforated on top as you can see below.
They are smooth edged.

Is there any info in your books (sources) about this offset printing press used
by the State Printer Berlin in 1947?
Who was the manufacturer? Goebel? Koenig Bauer?
Almost all stamps printed during the war and before were typography for definitives,
photogravure and engraved for commems, most of those printed in Vienna
between 1938 - 1945.
I see only one offset stamp during that time and that is Michel 907 issued
in January 1945.
Even during the early years of the Bundespost the offset ones were by
private printers such as Bagel and Westerman not by the State Printer in Berlin.

Hi
From what I understood, I suppose that the stamps were printed in big sheets like this :

Yes that's probably what a press sheet looked like.
Good job.

Hi,

Too much questions in one thread... :)

Yes, your sheet are perforated on top (Vertical perf going up to the edge) top sheet of Druckbogen only the horizontal perforation of the stamps. Separated in four Schalterbogen for distribution thus two do not have perf on top.

I suggest to buy Mr. Jan Hohmann Band 1 book for other questions.

Reichsdruckerei produced these with very old machine and in very not ideal conditions.

For the rest it is too much specialised to go through everything.

86 machines were used for the Allied Control Stamps and 7 of them were Offsetdruckmachinen.

Thats about it....

explaining all this stuff.

Even though I find these plate flaws interesting I'm not going to run out and
get a bunch of specialized books on the subject.

Hi Litho,

The Volume 1 from Jan is very interesting and not just plate flaws (because there are not much). The best for that are Part 1 to 4 from Albrecht Ostermann. They are exclusively for plate flaws. Control 1 (Teil 1 second edition) and 2 (Teil 2 second edition), Von Stephan (Teil 3 second edition) and the Leipzig Messe 1947-48 (Teil 4). Part 4 is very hard to find.

Best regards

Questions always welcome.

Here is your 24 Pf

edited to add position details

Plate 2, AB, 76
Plate 2, AB, 89
Plate 2, B, 96, Left green circle
Plate 12, AB, 96
Plate 2, AB, 97

Hi,

Von Stephan, Nr.963.

Same flaw two different positions. All sheet but only one present depend on type of sheet with plate number or not. Position 3 or 7.
