Great song and even better stamps!
I've got a pretty good collection of like to share.
My first Ottoman stamp with Egyptian overprint...I think it may be a forgery!
One printing of this stamp came out without watermark the 1 PE
Egypt was my first collecting interest and I've been running with this area along side my USA classic collecting.
I'll post my pages on this thread and everyone is welcome to join in!

this is my second page, Second Issue 1867-69 Sphinx and Pyramid, Perf 15 X 12 ½ and no English was used on these stamps.

I'm missing the 5 PI

1867

Then page 2, Third issue 1872 to 1875 complete with surcharges, also featured the 5p inverted frame.
These were printed by the Govt at the time, one printing was on thick paper with clear impressions, also one printing of thin paper with blurred impressions.
Perf 12½ X 13½

The watermark for this era is a crescent with a star above, however many stamps had inverted watermarks, which increase their Values.

As always the Royal family were avid stamp collectors having imperforate sheet of every stamp printed for them with the Royal Cartouche stamped on the back.

The Sultan of Egypt in these times was Muhammed Tewfik Pasha (Arabic: #1605;#1581;#1605;#1583; #1578;#1608;#1601;#1610;#1602; #1576;#1575;#1588;#1575;#8206;#8206;, Turkish: Muhammed Tevfik Pa#351;a; April 30 or November 15, 1852 – January 7, 1892), also known as Tawfiq of Egypt, was khedive of Egypt and the Sudan between 1879 and 1892.

Cheers

Laurie

Hi Laurie,
Very nice. How were you able to recognize the Egyptian overprint? Is it displayed in the catalogue you use? Or do you read the language (Arabic? Turkish)?

Eric

Hi Eric ...my heritage is Egyptian but I can't read or write Arabic.....I used Google and found a site called Egyptian study circle, they had a wealth of information on the early Egyptian stamps.

A post from my friend mseif_99
For the next issue from Egypt. A beautiful mint page.

1922 Egypt pictorials set of 13 with the Crown overprint - commonly known as the "1922 Proclamation of Monarchy" set.

A bit of history:

Although Egypt was under a "disguised" British rule since 1882, it was never declared as a colony or protectorate. At the outbreak of WWI, Britain declared Egypt to be a protectorate - The fate of the Suez Canal was just too serious to take any chances.

The international climate was promoting the ideas of home rule and independence. Egypt's nationalists saw how the rest of the Ottoman Empire was being divided up and wanted to be granted similar rights. Britain quickly came to the conclusion that it was better to grant independence to pro-British Egyptians rather than wait for nationalists to take power for themselves. In 1922, the protectorate was officially ended, and Egypt was declared to be an independent kingdom on 15th March 1922.
