Guess:
that is not a cancel, but the printing of the Newspaper of the front page.
Stamps were sometimes attached to the paper before printing.

Hang on there pardner, you may well be right.
I was shooting from the hip, and holding my breath, hence the guess
Your option seems more reasonable, albeit, I am not aufait with NSW stationery.
I find your example extremely interesting and saved it in my Stationery files
for any future Identification down the line.

Note: I still believe it is not a "Cancellation" per se, maybe a wrapper print for bulk newspaper usage, but then again, we would expect to see more examples.
Your example looks more like a wrapper, than Newspaper, paper.

I have another unusual usage, looks like a broadsheet fragment
Your example kind of fits into this strange usage.

The 1d Queen Victoria De La Rue Newspaper wrappers were first issued in 1865, the design being part of the much larger wrapper.

In this case, the wrappers would have been purchased by the publisher and imprinted with SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, ready to post the newspaper to subscribers.

When the newspaper was posted, the wrapper would receive a normal postmark. This one is from 1868:

One example (there are at least two sizes) of the full SYDNEY MORNING HERALD imprint is:

This snip is from the excellent AsianPhilatelist website, which shows beautiful examples of New South Wales postal stationery.
