Today I received an ebay message with this heading containing an offer of a 25% reduction on a cover I'd looked at. There is a link for 'details' that takes me to the listing but nothing about any discount. Do I just proceed to buy it assuming it will be applied? It just seems sort of strange.

All the "because you have shown interest" offers I have gotten show the new discounted price. I'm sure that if you proceed to buy, your invoice (or PayPal "commit to buy") will have the discounted price. It is all automatic. |

It's automatic. I bought a US stamp two weeks ago with one of those promos. Clicking through leads to the standard ebay shopping cart, so you can always cancel if something is wrong. |

It may get stranger. I received a "because you showed interest" discount offer of 7%. The thing is, the seller who sent the offer was not the seller who's item I put on my watch list. |

It's simpler than that. Sellers have a link in their portal that shows a list of items with watchers and allows the seller to send offers to "watchers" in an amount or percentage of seller's choosing. It's a relatively new development from ebay (at least to have it in the seller hub where sellers can readily see it), which is why it's becoming more common now. I use it from time to time and people occasionally purchase. There is also a checkbox to allow counteroffers, so you may have the ability as a buyer to ask for a bigger discount if you get one. |

I've used it as a seller many times, although I guess my offers weren't interesting. Of about 25-50 times I've done it, maybe only got a sale a couple times. I thought it was a big discount, but oh well.
Maybe the guy with the box finally received his package from Ed's Inflatable Novelties??? sorry, couldn't help it! :-) |
