Got an interesting message from a seller in Belgium this Morning:

Quote:
I am very sorry, but the Belgian Post for the moment does not accept letters with destinations outside Europe. This is true also for other European Posts and can change in the next weeks. Shall I wait? Do you have an European address? Please, advice what to do.

I had already read of them not taking packages, but that letters were still being accepted. I guess that has changed.

I don't think so, and we're still in the transition phase in any case - may have more to do with access to outgoing flights.

PostNL still services international mail.

Some countries, however are in complete lockdown and cannot be reached. Others may require alternative routes and a surcharge could appply.

I am still receiving mail from both the UK and Germany withour delay.https://www.postnl.nl/en/customer-s...vice-alerts/

BPost of Belgium still accepts mail to countries in Europe, i.e. the continent and not just the Union. It also accepts express packages for addresses outside Europe.

One interesting thing I've noted: some dealers- especially album and book publishers- are requiring their customers to supply a mobile phone # before shipping. apparently this is so the recipient can comply with signature requirements on receipt. Yvert is now doing this. Not that big a deal I suppose- if you have a device, I do not so I guess no orders from me to them for awhile.

On the odd occasion that I've used a courier, rather than Royal Mail, to send to mainland Europe, I've had to obtain a mobile number from the purchaser - more a courier, than a seller, requirement, I think.

Some sites - eg Eurostar - require a mobile number, in which case I give my daughter's. She then receives odd texts of which she knows nothing.

NSK, I hope they do not try to bring a surcharge in. As it is they charge a fuel surcharge on parcels in Canada, whether light or heavy for the same parcel size. And the price of fuel has gone down by 25% or more but the surcharge remains. They like to put the price up but never adjust down when their costs drop, even if it is only for a short while.

The surcharges apply to mail sent outside Europe (continent). The surcharge is € 1 or more depending on weight. It applies to track & trace items, registered items and insured items. This is because they cannot be shipped by regular flights and they need to contract other transporters to reach those destinations. There also is a surcharge for insured items to European destinations because some receiving postal services no longer guarantee delivery and are not willing to compensate for lost items. Otherwise, normal tariffs apply.
