The article in the Chronicle on the 1851 3c (super interesting article BTW) list Oct. 6, 1851 as the EKU on the EOB color. I don't remember where I got it, but I thought the EKU was Oct 4. I have an Oct 6 EOB stamp - is this among the EKU of this shade? This one is 31R1L.

This one is certified as an EOB by the PSE.

This might also be among the EKU for Plate 1L.

"The previously listed EDU for plate 1L, October 4, 1851 was challenged by Hulme and Amonette because no year data was present, nor a contemporaneous cancel, docketing, or enclosure to confirm 1851 usage - and the color could not be confirmed by inspection." - James Allen, "The 3c 1851 Stamp Plates: Color Changes and Earliest Documented Uses," The Chronicle, May 2020, p.143.

I think this one should be recognized as the 'LKU'

You will need to get the cancel identified and dated to even have a discussion of a verifiable early use. It's certainly worth exploring.

Jim Allen's 3c article in the latest Chronicle is a must read for any serious 3c student. Jim is a very knowledgeable long-time student of the stamp.

Jim Allen is a long-time client and I'll send him a link to this thread. During the past two years he has consigned to me 300+ covers, mainly 1851s & 1857s, from his collections and exhibits. The ones currently available are scanned and uploaded to a GoogleDrive folder here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/fold...?usp=sharing

All are net-priced and subject unsold. Airmail and insurance from the UK is free for $250+, otherwise $5. Payment by American Express, Mastercard or Visa (or personal check for APS members)
