I think he means he used the wife's nail polish remover to see the watermark. It's 100% acetone. Can remove light tape strains.

Thank you.
I thought that was what was meant. Sounds scary. Never come across that before.

SCF:
Acetone definitely attacks the ink on older engraved US stamps. It would dissolve any adhesive residue, too, but not necessarily stains.

We advise cold water, but no, stick it in the acetone.

Australian Commonwealth Beginners Specialist Catalogue, by Geoffrey Fellows & Richard Breckon

Finches, are you able to provide information as to when this was published and the name of the publisher?

Also any internet link to the book would be appreciated - I tried Googling without success.

Could finches actually be referring to the loose-leaf Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue, edited by Geoffrey Kellow and Richard Breckon?

Well yeah better dont use it #129315; it gave a lot better results in place of cold water but in the end once my stamp dried out its a bit more shinny n I think whatever the gkue residues were there are gone

Should I buy lighter fuel? Cause the nail polish gave a lot better results instantly with water it was difficult to find the watermark

Thank you, Don. That link should help Nonu. Personally, I prefer the commercial fluid for the reasons you cite. I live in the far north, where windows are tightly shut for much of the year. Couldn't tolerate lighter fluid fumes, let alone those of acetone (!) I've tried rubbing alcohol, but drying time was much too long and it did eventually take the ink off a stamp, so I went back to the admittedly pricey commercial fluid.
