Hey all Just out of curiosity, I would like to know members opinion on which they would rather prefer? In my limited understanding, I am looking at VF being well centred, with good margins, and G being good margins but slightly off centred on one side. Here is an example of what I am asking? probably not the best examples.

Thread title says 'MNH G' but this stamp looks used to me. (Or is this just an example and not the stamp in question? Don |

My preference is used with full city/town name and date. Centering is not terribly important, unless design is cut into. Any damage makes a stamp a space filler, IMO. |

IMHO, I prefer stamps that are unused (some call them "mint", others choose not to) and as well-centered as possible. Once upon a time, I was a MNH snob but realized at some point that I would be missing out on acquiring many stamps as they were/are out of my reach.
I collect stamps for the beauty of what is on the front, not for a pristine post office-fresh backside. I don't care much about what the back looks like as long as the stamp isn't damaged. Minor thins are sometimes acceptable, as are hinge remnants and pencil markings.
The only used I have in my collection are plate number coil singles.
Just my 2˘. |

I suppose the majority of collectors collect both, so it's not usually a choice that's forced on you. I'm not especially interested in collecting unmounted mint stamps and, in many cases, the difference between a mint stamp and an unused one (which means without gum here) isn't evident from the front. I'd certainly rather have an attractive mint stamp than a less attractive unmounted one. |

Many of those early MNH stamps have been re-gummed. That's why I collect used when it comes to 19th Century USA stamps. |

I like new stamps MNH and old used as here there is lot of moisture in the air so I don't take risk with old MNH stamps

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the bottom example here, the used stamp, looks re-perfed? |

I usually like to see the designs so not usually interested in postmarks obscuring the stamp. |
