Since we need more 5c stamps in here ... 3-13-23R1, vertical strip.

3R is top row, A relief, followed by B, and C reliefs. The 5c stamp was made with a 4-relief roller. This shows A-B-C.

23R1 is the defective transfer - the same position I posted earlier, I believe on page 1 of this thread.

Really nice cover. I am still looking for my first S.12. Multiples on cover will have to wait!

I assume these are still on the cover?

txstamp and classic coins -- Thanks for the compliments on the reconstructed plate 8 block. txstamp -- regarding the cover from which they came -- I never saw it as the stamps were already off cover when I purchased them -- probably over 20 years ago now -- that said, I was told by the seller that the "cover" was actually a soiled and badly damaged piece of a cover -- so he soaked the stamps and sold them to me for my plate reconstructions. classic coins -- agree that plate 8 stamps readily stand out from the other "no-inner line" dull red plates (i.e., 4, 6, and 7) due to the generally heavier recutting of all 4 FL's -- and also that there are some really fresh and striking colors seen from plate 8. txstamp -- that is a really nice vertical strip of the 5c value. I know that vertical strips of the 3c value are much tougher to find versus horizontal strips -- and presume the same is true of the 5c value as well?

Good eye. Yes, I currently have that cover, and I cropped the stamps from it. I wasn't sure if readers of this thread really cared to see full covers vs stamps. I'm a cover guy these days :-)

I bought it in the Middendorf sale, and it is ex-Mayer. There are only two known multiples of 23R1, imperforate on or off cover. Both happen to be on cover.

I have the other cover as well . My avatar is a cropped scan of the 23R1 from the other cover.

Above is the other 23R1 cover. Pos 23-24-25R1. Ex-Ackerman

This cover was tucked away in a postal history collection for decades until recently, when I bought it.

Regarding scarcity of vertical vs horizontal multiples, the Zuckerman census of on-cover #12s, showed 12 horizontal strips of 3 and 11 vertical.

He had about 350 covers recorded at that point.

Typically, for most 1851 issue stamps, you are definitely correct - vertical multiples tend to be much scarcer than horizontal. This was an on-cover only datapoint.

not often seen on OB stamps as a bit of a late usage.

ioagoa, I've only been aware of the NY APL for a few years as I'm a relatively new collector. Having said that, in my searches as a stampcrow adding to my collection, I haven't seen an OB with the APL on or off cover.

Lovely!!

Classic Coins, thanks for posting your Petersburg cancel. Its a nice clear strike that reveals a number of areas of similarity.
The alignment looks like a match, as does the font, even the area of "TE" in Petersburg which may have been worn in some way and did not transfer well. Seems probable. Thanks.

By the way & for everyone, this is a great thread, getting real specialists and less specialized collectors to focus together on a variety of examples and questions within a particular issue. Seems like a very useful and enjoyable approach.

spqr - Those are wonderful 5c covers. Some great frankings in there.

Where would we be on covers to Halifax without the Hare correspondence?
