CC, that's a busy and interesting position.
Is the remnant frame line different than a "layout line"?

Yes. Referring back to the 41P2a die proof that ioagoa posted on the previous page, the faint frame line on 86R4 is a frame line from the die that got very weak by the time the design got transferred to the plate. I believe what you are referring to as layout lines can be seen faintly in the left margin of the 41P2a die proof, well left of the design. |

3-cent position 26L5L is the only position with recut variety #35; Lower Label and Lower Right Diamond Block Joined at Top. The connecting line apparently was so shallow on the plate that only a trace shows on some printings due to plate wear and/or wiping. The line shows very faintly on the Chase print, and in his book, Chase didn't include it in the recutting varieties table, which only went up to variety 34. Variety #35 was added by William K. McDaniel to his Condensed Plating Information list in USPCS Chronicle #95. BTW, a scan of the actual stamp shown at position 26L5L on the Carroll Chase Smithsonian print is posted on the Stamp Smarter plating site: http://www.stampsmarter.com/feature..._Plates.html |

Hi Classic Coins -- Your 26L5L is a really nice example of recut variety #35. Thanks for showing it. Regarding interesting varieties of recutting -- here is one that I came across yesterday -- not the best stamp in the world, but from the perspective of a plater, has a lot of stuff going on. This one is a Scott #10A -- position 45L0 -- showing the following recut combination: #1 -- both inner lines recut #12 -- 2 vertical lines recut in the upper left triangle #17 -- 1 vertical line recut in the lower right triangle #24 -- left inner line down too far #25 -- right inner line down too far There is also a double transfer to boot -- which is visible in the white space of some of the letters in the lower label block -- and also as an eastward doubling at the upper right corner of the lower right diamond block. Hey -- classic coins -- I just noticed that this thread you started is now up to 998 posts -- and this post will make it to 999. I am not sure, but I think you may be on the verge of setting an SCF record of 1,000 posts to a single thread. I think the honor of making that 1,000th post should be yours!!! Thanks for starting this "show and tell" thread -- which I have very much enjoyed these last few months. Regards //ioagoa |

Thank you to all participants of this topic! I began collecting the 1851-57 imperforates 36 years ago, and I've been actively plating and studying colors of the 3-cent issue for 22 years. Yet, I have learned so much from the reciprocation of others here since May. I will be eternally grateful to all of you for what you've shared. I hope this interaction has enriched others as it has me. |

Thanks, ioagoa.
That's a beautiful 45L0, and very interesting with all the different recutting features! |

Risny - You have a nice stamp. Please don't think that I'm trying to outdo you, but I'm also very proud of this #16 that I recently acquired. It is position 64L1 - recut top and bottom. |
