That's a Ty V #24.
The side scratches are one of several give-aways here. |

Speaking of side scratches, is there a widely accepted explanation of how they occurred? I have long assumed that they were created on the transfer roll when, for some reason, side ornaments were trimmed. That is not a very satisfying answer. Is that the consesus? |

This is one of my favorite purchases from 2025 -- Scott #26 -- position 71L18 showing the "big crack" -- in a vertical strip of 61-81L18 -- also including a single copy of 72L18 showing the extension of the crack -- and with 61L18 showing a trace of the imprint. As an aside, position 81L18 is not platable unless in a multiple. All of the plating and annotations are in Dr. Chases handwriting on a 3" x 5" mounting card he made up. Interestingly, Chase originally noted that the printing was "late state" -- and then corrected his typo to clarify that the printing was a "late impression" (as plate 18 only exists in one state). This particular item was lot 141 in the Dec. 8, 1961 Samuel C. Paige sale of the Chase estate -- where it was purchased by Amonette -- and recently sold in a Siegel sale late last year where I was lucky enough to acquire it. A piece of philatelic history! |

Is that the consesus? @ttreen - sorry I missed your post earlier. The main new work on Ty V reliefs that I am aware of is Dave Zlowe's Chronicle article(s) on the Ty V relief bruises, some time back. He actually discovered those circa 25 years ago and pitched them to us (1c/3c study group) - I'm happy he got that written up. I cannot remember if he had any new insights into the relief scratches or not. I don't recall anything new, but it might be worth double checking his relief bruise write-up to be sure. I wonder if the reliefs got damaged (bruised) while they were being modified at the sides? I don't recall his theory on the bruising origin and I don't have time right now to go re-read the article. |

Kind of along the line of your 71L18 post, here is a neat #35 10c Ty V, plate 2 left pane imprint reconstruction I picked up last year. |

Very nice strip, stallzer.
Although I think that the leftmost stamp (or bottom, depending on your perspective, position 70) is plate 9 or 10. Note the position of "Toppan"; for plate 7 and 8, I believe all that you should see is "Topp" on that stamp. The spacing of the word on that stamp doesn't look right for plate 7. |

I saw that. Had the image loaded in my hosting site and didn't notice until after I posted. I must have scanned the wrong stamp Pretty sure this is the missing piece. |

Hello all, I have this beautiful US #38 MOGnh. I have tried to plate it, kinda stuck. it seems it from row 10. so that would leave 20 positions. its not from the R pane, so down to 10 spots. I think it could be 91-93L 96-97L so I'm down to 5 positions.. any and all help would be much appreciated. |
