Canada's Postage Stamps Of The Small Queen Era 1870-1897 - Required Purchase?

I will unequivocally state that the book is a "must-have" for Small Queen collectors/philatelists. I use it all the time.

I also agree that to sell a book that you have made a digital copy of is simply wrong.

For example, as a teacher in Canada, there are strict copyright rules about teachers copying materials from a textbook to use in class. I believe it is something like a small percentage of the whole is allowed to be copied for class use.

The publisher obviously wishes to make their money on the purchase of multiple textbooks (and rightly so).

Some more compact teacher resources are sold with what is called "black-line masters" that allow a teacher to make copies for a classroom. The license includes that, however, the teacher is not allowed to then resell the resource and continue to use previous copies.

In the case under discussion here, owning the original text/book is what gives a person the right to make a personal copy (digital or otherwise) - however, they must keep the original or the rights are transferred to the new owner.

Most collectors that I know follow this rule. If someone asks for information say, from an out-of-print but valuable reference, they won't just copy the whole thing and post it - they might do a few pages. The older references are usually available in the aftermarket
and if not, then I think getting the original author's permission to share online is only right and proper.

I don't know the laws in the US on this, but regardless, it certainly seems unethical and hurts publishers and anyone that put time and effort into a published product.

I thought it might be useful if everybody in this discussion was made aware of The Copyright Act.

As can be seen in the following extract from the Act, there is no infringement if the owner of a source (the book) makes a copy in whole or in part for his own use. However, when the source is sold, the copies must be destroyed.

Good post gportch but assuming that is the Canadian law, perhaps things are different in the US - though I would doubt it as the law seems like common sense.
