I have a friend who is looking for catalogue information on two US Oleomargerine revenue stamps denominated at 5 cents and 25 cents. Apparently Scott Specialized does not list these. Is there a catalogue out there that does this? The same question applies to US Lock Seals revenues from 1875. He is primarily interested in the catalogue value for these stamps. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The tenth edition of the Springer catalogs is the last one that has the oleos. The late Carter Litchfield wrote the definitive volume on the oleo stamps. Springer also lists lock seals. All Springer catalogs are long out of date price wise; a new version catalog of the material covered by Springer has been in the works for several years, and might come out at some point.
Oleomargarine stamps with face values of 5˘ and 25˘ sound like they are state oleo stamps. All the federal oleomargarine stamps were denominated in pounds. You can find current retail prices for lock seals on Eric Jackson's website, although there are many that are not represented there. Scans of the relevant items would certainly assist in giving some sense of value.
You can find more on the lock Seals in United States Internal Revenue Stamps Hydrometers, Lock Seals by J. Delano Bartlett and Walter W. Norton published in 1912, reprinted 1982
