Received this in the mail yesterday and hadn't seen the red circle cancel before. Not sure if it is a new style or just "new to me". It was on a standard letter mailed from just a few zipcodes away so it didn't get any special handling or travel to any exotic ports of call that I am aware of.

Thanks for looking and for any input

Please post an image of the entire front of this item. The spray cancel in black is standard for today's mail. The red "dater" is known form many post offices as well. Cannot tell from your image if the red dater was on the envelope under or put on top of the stamp? Unusual to see both on a cover unless there was some sort of error or delay?

The red cancel was probably applied first by a clerk at the p.o. counter

It may have been inadvertently wiped off the slick-surfaced Santa stamp, or it may have just been hard to see. Apparently, it was sent through the automated equipment for this reason. That's my guess.

Sometime during the 1980's, the USPS relaxed their restriction which had required post offices to order date stamp and canceling devices from their USPS Supply Department. Many post offices then sought out private vendors who provided these devices in a self-inking format, which saved postmasters and clerks time in cancelling mail. The variety of these devices is endless, and a fun sideline to collect.

Thanks all! Everything nowadays is a pre-paid permit mailer so a stamp with a hand cancel was enough to throw me off

I'll have to ask the sender what they did to warrant such attention to his letter
