Any idea on how to tell the difference between R198 and R209? I tried to research this out on Stamp Smarter but I can't seem to distinguish a difference between the two. The stamp I have is affixed to a Live Stock Insurance certificate and is post marked April 24, 1916. There is also a 5 Cents on the same document. Any help is appreciated.

The difference is which watermark they have; at that point in time the probability is R209 and R211.

How can I determine which watermark? Is the watermark visible without magnification?

I don't know of a way to determine it on document; to me they are not valuable enough to remove just to find out. I don't know the dates that the SL watermarked paper was used, but I suspect that it was early on and just using what was available since the DL revenue watermark had been in use for several years by then. Perhaps someone else will have more info and be able to nail down more specific dates.

Keep in mind that there had been no documentary revenues issued since the 1902 series, and they were not used for very long. So there probably wasn't a supply on hand in 1914, so they just used the same paper that the W/F issue was printed on until they got a new supply.
