1857 Washington 3 C - Trying To Determine Type And Color

Hello Stamp Masters,

I am a new collector. I am trying to understand whether this stamp is a #26 or #27. I believe the stamp is a rose or dull red. I also tried to determine if there is a grill - which I have discovered seems to be very difficult.

I am just trying to learn, not value. I stumbled in stamps upon an inheritance and I am grateful.

Anyway, your help is appreciated.

Hi Michelle, Please post a larger, clearer image oriented upright, if you can. This image may be too small for us to confirm the type.

Grills were not used on this stamp issue.

Determining the color from a posted image is essentially impossible, unfortunately.

This design was printed in four types:

#25 - Outer frame lines at left, right, top, and bottom (no inner lines on sides)
#25A - Outer frame lines at left, right, top, and bottom (inner line on one or both sides)
#26 - Outer frame lines at left and right only (frame lines extend beyond stamp design)
#26A - Outer frame lines at left and right only (frame lines do not extend beyond stamp design)

These lines are visible in the below illustration. With these descriptions, maybe you can describe what your stamp's features are.
