Need opinions on this stamp. I know of no stamp that looks like this, so is it airbrushed?

I know that stamp :) An altered Type III was my conclusion. I would imagine the alteration predates the airbrush. |

The shells are missing at the bottom, the circles above the X's are too incomplete and there are 3 Pearl's on each side - therefore not a 35. Bottom line too thick for a 34 and too compete for a 32 or 33.
That's why I feel it's bogus. |

Caper, you are correct and I agree with sinclair: it's an altered Type III (#33), with bottom frame line augmented probably in an attempt to mimic #34. |

Assuming that the pearls are not also drawn in, just like the bottom line. Plus the Scott catalog has a footnote which states "usually only one pearl remains at each end of the lower label, but some samples show 2 or 3 on the right side. So adding a few on the left is not that difficult for some people. |

For a bit I thought it could be a #35 with the bottom doubled, like this one: but the rest of the stamp just doesn't match up in any way. Then I considered the possibility of a #34 with the bottom recut, but there are none that are doubled and all of them have a relatively thin recut bottom line. It, along with three just OK 35's, two 32's, and a 33 just sold for $338... https://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-1857-W...047675.l2557 |

If it is an altered #33 in an attempt to look like a #34, it is a crude attempt. Why can't it just be a #35 from a badly worn state of the plate? Due to the cancel, I can't see that there are 3 pearls on the right. |

It is a Scott #33. Crude is a subjective word. It was good enough to bring in a couple hundred dollars with the buyer probably figuring he/she got a bargain. |

Assuming that it actually is a 33, "good enough" for what level of buyer? Lots of collectors spend money on stamps that turn out not to be what they thought they were. Unless someone can plate it, or actually gets to examine it, there is no way to be certain what it is. |

Quote: Why can't it just be a #35 from a badly worn state of the plate? Due to the cancel, I can't see that there are 3 pearls on the right. The pearls are there on each side. The cancel obscures the third pearl at right, but no #35 has three complete pearls at left and two complete pearls at right. And no #35 has a bottom frame line that looks like this one--way too thick. |

I wonder if the whole bottom margin has been added. It might not be, but it does look funny on the ebay site scan. |
