Thanks for bumping this great thread. We have a chance of rain this weekend, so maybe I'll have time for scanning.

The above stamp:
The "Asokan Capital" The ubiquitous emblem on Indian stamps including its watermarks.
A member of the Maurya dynasty was Asoka, grandson of his house's founder, who became emperor in 273 B.C. We know more about Asoka than about any other early Indian ruler.
He was an eager builder, the first to use stone in India. His great palace, now no more, was in its day the wonder of the Chinese pilgrims. Asoka built many memorials, called stupas, to Buddhist saints. They were solid-domed structures of brick and stone built on a round base with beautifully carved balustrades and gateways. In addition to these the principal remains of the reign of Asoka are his magnificent pillars, huge sandstone monoliths, forty to fifty feet high, weighing some fifty tons. The pillars were surmounted by capitals ornamented usually by symbolic figures.
The most striking of these capitals is the one at Sarnath, with its four magnificent lions, which is now used by the government of the Union of India as a symbol of the state.
PS : In Thailand one of the major thoroughfare "Soi Asoke" is named after him.

ok how many do I sign you up for Rod? a block of 4 ? these are embossed so that you can see it on the other side and no its not an exact copy of the sarnath pillar of ashoka but this is as close as it gets.
and asoka was the only emperor to renounce war in world history after a victory. this along witht he spread of buddhism would lead to the end of the mauryan dynasty and the disintegration of india less than 50 years after his death. india would not be united again till the coming of akbar 15 centuries later. |

I thought someone had posted this stamp in this thread already, but I don't see it...a Nova Scotia Sc#8 I just received. It is nicely centered for the issue, but it looks a bit narrow to me. (?) |

Never seen this thread. Great examples of engraved stamps. Especially liked all the classic new zealand stamps.
Damn, there's so many out there. |
