Hi David
I believe the annual Spanish artists series were printed photogravure. But you are right Spain has many beautiful engraved stamps as for example the Castle series which I like a lot. They have very interesting subjects like the one commemorating El Cid, can't remember if they came out before or after the movie with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, great movie, the kind I wish they produced again but I doubt it. |

Good stuff Anthony. As I was looking at the Br Honduras ones I noticed again that bi coloured engraved stamps have a certain quality not found on monochrome or multicolour. When I first look at them, the eye moves from vignette to frame and back to vignette. It's like looking at two different stamps at the same time. |

I love the classic engraved litho's. Especially the ones that show scenery. It's like looking at a National Geographic magazine or a travel documentary and feeling like you're there and really get what the artist was trying was trying to portray what the subject is about. |

You're right Donna it's amazing how well designed and engraved some stamps are. Many of them are works of art themselves. |

Donna, As a hobby isn't it great that you can also learn more about art, history, geography and other cultures etc.
The Spanish castles are great as are the ones of monasteries and churches, some fairly recent too. |

Quote: I am looking for a copy of the book on Slania's life work - Lennart Bernadotte präsentiert das Lebenswerk von Czeslaw Slania. If anyone knows where I can purchase one for less than £100 I'll be grateful. I've been looking (casually) for that one as well. I did find this book a couple of weeks ago, published by Fischer, the leading Polish catalogue publisher. A very fuzzy scan due to the fact that the book is larger than the scanner glass and it has to sit up on top of the frame around the glass. A relevant quote from Ann Mette Heindorff's Slania site: Quote: .... biography is available through the book by Janusz Dunst: Czeslaw Slania Katalog Prac [Czeslaw Slania Catalogue of Works], published 09.15.2007 by Fischer Printing House, Poland. The book contains an extensive biography in Polish and English, and colour photographs of all Slania's works on stamps, philatelic items, and banknotes. ISBN 83-88352-41-5. The book is published in 1500 numbered copies + 100 unnumbered, and will not be reprinted. Ryan |

I wouldn't mind having the Slania book myself but $375 USD?
No way I would pay anywhere near that.
It will be interesting to see what it goes for, if it sells at all.
But there is free shipping. |

I swear there's some spooky post-halloween telepathy going on with this forum. Just before logging on just now, I had spent the last hour or so sorting through some Spanish stamps I had not looked at in months, and a few of these popped out at me. Unfortunately I am not at home so can't scan any of my favourites tonight. However, I'm sure this thread will run and run and I will get a chance later. Thanks for posting lovely pics everyone! |

Hi stampgal,
I'm looking forward to seeing your scans. Are they perhaps some of those superb engraved Spanish stamps from the thirties? |
