The stamp is a 1938 Dr Sun Yat Sen, BUT the surharge, if that is what it is, is ony in Chinese characters.

All examples from my elderly SG catalogue show surcharges in both Chinese character AND Roman numerals.

Any and all help welcome

regards
Tony

Hi Tony, try North China. Was issued in 1942, according to the Scott catalog.

Thanks but cannot find it in my SG catalogue [and I do not have acces to the Scott catalog.
I've tried all of the 'various parts' of China, the nearest is Sinkiang, but the overprint there is not the same albeit the date is about the same.
Could you send me a copy of the relevent Scott listing?

regards
Tony

Republic of China
Scott Catalogue
North China # 8N7 1942 4c on 8c surcharge Japanese Occupation.
Good luck with Gibbons.

With Scott, you work with the "type" first (A57)
then the stamp is identified as Sc#353
which is the Type lll stamp of Sun Yat Sen.

If a catalogue number is quoted it is Scott.
I've noticed factual errors in some listings.

I think the comment about Scott values being dreamy is correct.

This does not add up.

Hi Tony, doesn't your catalog have an index? Maybe look for North China there. Rod, thanks for typing all that info.

Yes I know that , You maintain you do not have a Scott catalogue,
yet you say prices are dreamy? and errors in listing.
I was wondering how you made that assumption.

Yes, and I told you that was under Japanese occupation

Because the items offered for sale are listed in my SG catalogue.
Errors have been, for instance:
issue date 10 years too early
GB stamps listed as 'rare russian'
Prices in excess of US100 for listing with obvious errors etc.
etc etc,

I assumed that Japanese occupation would be under China [not Japan) especially as some of the overprints/surcharges listed in the China section of the SG catalogue relate to Japanese occupation (of China).

Tony
