Don't Know Much About Penny Reds. Please Advise.

I recently acquired these two stamps. Found out the one is early and has blue paper. And a wonderful 4 borders. But the other one not so sure about. Over inked possibly ?

I also ran across this one. It appears to have had the pen cancel removed at some point. But the ink below the 2 is odd?

Austria - engravers name?

I have no idea who the engraver would be. Penny reds are out of my expertise. Thanks. Actually I purchased another large WW collection and these were in there. I was just curious about the color. And excited about the other.

If you would look in your catalog you will find that the Austria stamp has that printing at the bottom, either it's an engravers or printers name. Also stamp borders are more widely known as margins in the philatelic nomenclature most collectors and dealers use.

The name of the designer, Rudolf Junk, is shown underneath the arms on the Austrian stamp.

Yes that's correct. Rudolf Junk. Just looked. And the light red penny doesn't have a plate number but the darker one say 77. Thanks. Hope it helps.

Why did the photos/scans that you posted disappear into thin air? If you are happy with your acquisitions, that should be what matters most. Plate 77 I doubt it.

The stamp looks OK at first glance but the lower right margin looks off to me.

Without a better scan I can't help further.

Hard to see things with the relatively poor scans, but sometimes oddities and shadows around the cancellations are caused by the fact each Post office made their stamping ink locally to a recipe sent from head office think sometimes the ink had too much grease. The imperforate stamp is a good 4 margin specimen, slightly spoiled by the messy cancellation. I have an album of over 400 Penny reds that I sometimes look at but leave largely untouched because when I look at the Gibbons specialised catalogue on GB Queen Victoria I just go slack jawed and think that way lies madness.
