Catalogues note that forgeries exist for both the 1882-94 series (SC Q7-15, Y&T 7-14, Mi 7-14) and the 1895-7 series (Q16-24, Y&T 15-27, Mi 15-23). Varro Tyler's Focus on Forgeries explains how to recognize the counterfeits of that first series (mainly perforation). Can anyone tell me how to recognize counterfeits of the 1895-7 series? Or where I could look to find out?

Here's a sample. How can we identify counterfeits?

Assume you started by confirming perforation as 15.5 x 14.5?

Other notes from the Belgium specialized catalogue:

Paper: Until 1899, portrait paper was watermarked. The 30c, 40c, 70c, and 90c are therefore without watermark.

However, the catalogue note then says: "With watermark: +50%".

And finally: "20c and 60c also without perforation".

"Curiosities": 70c without number on the front. And 70c with number on the reverse.

Thank you, Carlstamp. I had thought that perforation might be a likely clue. For the earlier 1882-94 series Varro Tyler says that forgeries were usually perf 14, sometime 11, and occasionally imperf. Counterfeits also unwatermarked, though the genuine were printed on sheets of 100 with a sheet watermark, so genuine copies may also show no watermark. So, unless I learn better, I'll assume that for the 1895-7 series perforation is the main criterion in sorting genuine from fake.

In addition to Calstamps post:

The watermark consisted out of 2 panels with text, The panels only covered a small part of the sheet .

There are fewer stamps with a watermark, therefore 50% extra cat value.

From 1892 the watermark was bigger ann was only 1 panel with text.so watermark examples are a bit easier to find.

Above also applies to the 1882/1894 series
